BOOK B UNIT 1 READING 1 "PROJECT MULBERRY"

"PROJECT MULBERRY"

This story is from the novel Project Mulberry. It tells about a young girl named Julia and her friend Patrick. They want to win a prize at the state fair by doing a project on the life cycle of silkworms. Over a period of three days they care for the caterpillars and film them as they spin their silk cocoons. On the third day, Julia tells Patrick about an idea she has for their project. She will make an embroidery showing the life cycle of the silkworm from egg to worm to cocoon and, finally, to a moth. She wants to use the silk thread they make from their
silkworms to show the cocoon stage. Patrick likes her idea but points out
something that Julia finds shocking. They will have to kill the silkworms.
